Steve Locati

AIA / Senior Partner

Since joining Locati Architects in 1991, Steve Locati has been instrumental in shaping the firm’s creative direction and national reputation for authentic, client-centered design. With experience across every aspect of the practice, Steve brings a grounded and collaborative approach to architecture, defined by clear communication, respect for craftsmanship and a deep understanding of how people live and connect within the spaces they inhabit.

Known for his straightforward style and ability to transform vision into reality, Steve guides each project through an open and honest design process. His leadership ensures that every Locati project, whether a mountain retreat, family estate or legacy property—reflects a seamless integration of client vision, landscape and budget.

“Each design is a collaboration between the client, architect, builder and interior designer and no two are ever the same. What sets Locati Architects apart is our commitment to creating authentic designs that respond to our clients’ vision, the site and the budget.”

A Montana native and the youngest of six children, Steve grew up in a creative family that instilled in him a deep appreciation for art, design and storytelling. That early foundation influences his ability to design multi-generational homes that foster connection, belonging, and shared experience.

Before beginning his architectural career, Steve served in the U.S. Army, where he initially worked in combat arms before transitioning to graphic support within military intelligence, a move prompted when a commanding officer recognized his exceptional artistic ability. Following his military service, he earned both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Architecture from Montana State University.

Steve remains deeply connected to MSU, serving on the School of Architecture Advisory Council and helping establish the Locati Architects Endowment, the largest in the college’s history. He was also selected by the university president as one of 15 distinguished alumni for the inaugural MSU mentoring program.

Outside of work, Steve is an avid outdoorsman and endurance athlete who has completed the Leadville 100 ultra mountain bike race multiple times. He enjoys all forms of outdoor adventure with his wife and three children.

“Every project is unique, every client offers new inspiration, so I approach each new relationship with an open mind allowing clients to chart the concept.”
